When the weather starts to get warmer, everyone begins to ditch the treadmills and head outside to run, myself included. I’m not a serious runner, but I do enjoy the occasional 3-mile jaunt through Germantown and Bicentennial Park. If I’m feeling really ambitious, I’ll run up and down the Capitol Steps a few times and call it a day feeling pretty good about myself. If that’s enough enough and you really want to feel like a total badass while enjoying the sunshine, check out SPF with Brittany Farrar and Shed Group Fitness. It’s definitely a challenge and you might want to pass out in the middle, but once it’s finished, you’ll have had your daily dose of fresh air and kicked total booty. You might even escape with a killer sports bra tan.
After introductions (meet the people you’re sweating with!), we warmed up and went over the workout. Right away, I knew this wouldn’t be a walk in the park. This particular workout was split into three parts: upper stairs + a loop around the Capitol, 5 rounds of stairs + burpees + a third exercise that changed each round, and finally a challenging finisher that involved running up the stairs and both hills . When you finally make it up that final hill (which feels steep as all get out), you feel like you can conquer anything. While the workout always changes, you’re sure to get in a good mix of cardio, plyos and bodyweight movements. You’ll always leave with a total body workout and legs made of jello…promise.
There’s no denying that Shed Group Fitness takes things to another level. Their classes are consistently some of the most challenging and most rewarding workouts in Nashville, making them one of my favorite stops. SPF offers the same quality workout you expect from Shed, but adds a different twist. Additionally, sometimes Shed feels sooo difficult that I’m hyperfocused on myself and my own workout. For SPF50, I really sensed an element of teamwork and encouragement that I sometimes miss out on in other workouts. Be sure to try out SPF on Wednesdays at 5:45 PM- it’s available on ClassPass and through the MindBody app for $22 or $10 if you’re a Shed newbie.
