In college, when my boyfriend and I started dating, we definitely weren’t the healthiest couple around. Let’s just say, there were a lot of late-night Chicken Ranch Wraps from Cookout and days laying around watching Netflix involved. As we’ve started to adopt healthier lifestyles, we’ve realized how great it is to have each other as an accountability partner. Having someone wake you up to get to the gym, encourage you to lift heavier, stay a little longer, and not dive into a bag of chips when you get home has made making healthy choices easier. Since we’re in a long-distance relationship, we can get trapped in ‘vacation mode’ when visiting each other, but making a commitment to do something active each day has left us both feeling healthier and happier. Most of the time, we’ll hit up a cycling class, head to the gym, or take Salem on a walk, but this weekend, we came up with some ideas to make your next date a little more active and maybe a bit more interesting.
You definitely don’t need a significant other for these workouts – bring your BFF instead! Don’t tell him, but sometimes it’s more fun leave Dan at home.
Five Workouts for Couples in Nashville
1. Get Competitive at Cyclebar Franklin
What’s more motivating than a little friendly competition? Head out to Cyclebar in Franklin to turn things up a notch. You’ll ride to the beat, break a sweat, and rack up points the harder you push. Keep an eye on the leaderboard to track each other’s RPM, power, and trophies which calculate your watts/your weight evening out the playing field. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of Tori’s themed rides inspired by some other famous lovers – Drake vs. Rihanna, anyone? Up the ante and make the loser pay for brunch! I’d suggest Tupelo Honey Cafe up the street. You’ll get an email with your total calorie burn right after class, so you’ll know you earned those biscuits ahead of time.
2. Strengthen Communication with Acroyoga at Steadfast and True Yoga
Is it just me or do acroyoga videos fill up your Instagram feed? I seriously cannot get enough of them. The level of trust and badass strength that it takes to master this combination of acrobats and yoga is insane, but definitely worth the practice. You’ll sharpen those communication skills, learn to let go, and work to trust both yourself and your partner. 3. Head Outside at Radnor Lake
Nashville offers a lot of great hiking (or leisurely walks) right outside the city. Stay close to home by heading out to Radnor Lake or Percy Warner. Feeling more adventurous? Make a day out of a trip to Cummins Falls or Rock Island. Give yourself a chance to take a much-needed break from technology and enjoy each other’s company. There’s honestly nothing better than fresh air, killer views, and quality time with your S.O.
4. Compromise at Krank Fitness
Can’t even agree on what to make for dinner or which Netflix show to binge next, let alone choose a workout? Compromise by hitting up 30/30 at Krank Fitness for 30 minutes of cycling followed by 30 minutes of strength. They cut no corners, and trust me when I say that the 30 minutes of cycling almost feels harder than their normal 50 minute class – less recovery, more ass-kicking. During the second half of class, you’ll use sandbags, boxes, the TRX bands, and more to give yourself a total-body workout. This will seriously test your endurance and keep everyone in the relationship happy.
5. Get Higher at Climb Nashville
Looking for a workout off the beaten path? Have fun exploring Climb Nashville’s indoor rock climbing facility together. A 30-minute belay lesson from one of Climb Nashville’s instructors will get you both ready to adventure around even if you haven’t climbed before. Trust and communication are key here once again – catching on, now? This is definitely a challenging total body workout outside the scope of your normal spin class or bootcamp, but what’s better than trying new things together? While their West Nashville location is much larger, their East Nashville location is right next to Jeni’s…you can’t go wrong either way.
